The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®

The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® model was developed by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner. Over thirty years ago they wanted answers to the simple question “What do you do as a leader when you’re performing at your personal best?”. Since then they have conducted over 70,000 interviews and identified five core practices and 30 associated behaviours that make a difference to how people perform as leaders.

The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® and the Leadership Practices Inventory®, the powerful 360 degree tool at the heart of this framework, can help to transform individual and organisational performance.

Model the Way

Do you lead by example?

Leaders define and determine how people should be treated and organisational objectives achieved.

Inspire a Shared Vision

Do you talk about the future?

Are you clear on what you want to and can accomplish?

Do the people you work with share your ambitions?

Leaders believe they can make a difference and have a vision of what their organisation can be. They are able to persuade others to share in that dream and want to be a part of it.

Challenge the Process

Do you challenge yourself and others to look for new or improved ways of doing things?

Do you look to understand why things didn’t go quite as planned and learn for the next time ?

Do you see change coming and can you adapt?

Leaders don’t accept things as they are. They want to improve through innovation and experimentation. They’re not afraid of risk taking and know that we can learn from our mistakes.
